Smile Stories: Before and After Smiles...
Operation Smile's volunteer medical professionals travel around the world to treat children suffering from facial deformities. Their efforts mean new smiles for thousands of children, including these former patients:
Filipine and Sandrine
Filipine’s father traveled more than 300km to Tamatave, Madagascar, with the hope that his daughter would receive surgery from the OSSA surgical team. When Filipine returned home after her surgery her father told the villagers about their experiences in Tamatave. Filipine’s classmates surrounded her as if she was movie star and looked at her in amazement. Her grandmother came running from the rice fields with her basket filled with rice seeds still around her waist – she rejoiced that her family had returned home and reached out to her “new” granddaughter.
When Sandrine returned home with her father after her surgery in Tamatave, Madagascar, her mother began running through the rice paddies and fields with her infant son tied to her back. She was speechless when she saw her daughter. Their house quickly filled with family and friends that came to see Sandrine and hear her story – everyone was smiling and laughing.
When the villagers from Sandrine and Filipine’s village saw them for the first time after their surgery, some joked that their father’s had found new kids. Their father’s faces beamed with joy. The girls were still so shy and and out of habit still covered their mouths as people moved in for a closer look.
