Smile Stories: Before and After Smiles...

Operation Smile's volunteer medical professionals travel around the world to treat children suffering from facial deformities. Their efforts mean new smiles for thousands of children, including these former patients:

Sibya
Sibya’s life-altering journey started with a 45 minute operation.
Chanel
Chanel Barnard from South Africa was brought to the OSSA pre-screening clinic at Port Shepstone Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal and received surgery during the Empangeni Mission in September 2006.
Filipine
Filipine’s father traveled more than 300km to Tamatave, Madagascar, with the hope that his daughter would receive surgery from the OSSA surgical team.

Sandrine
When Sandrine returned home with her father after her surgery in Tamatave, Madagascar, her mother began running through the rice paddies and fields with her infant son tied to her back.

Bulela

Milahlale
Stepping into the ward, one cannot ignore the little girl with broken smile looking at you from across the room. If you are swift, you’d notice it before she quickly shys-away, avoiding eye contact.
Manyiwe
“I was afraid. I did not want to draw any attention to myself and I didn’t think people would understand.”
